Shoulder Pain Treatment in Plano

Shoulder pain that limits your reach, disrupts your sleep, or doesn’t improve with rest deserves more than a wait-and-see approach. For many patients, the frustration isn’t just the pain itself—it’s trying treatment after treatment without getting to the actual source.

Why Shoulder Pain Isn’t Always a Shoulder Problem

The shoulder is one of the most mobile and mechanically complex joints in the body. That complexity means pain can come from several different sources, and the area that hurts most isn’t always where the problem originates. A compressed nerve root in the cervical spine can produce aching, burning, or weakness in the shoulder and upper arm without any injury to the shoulder itself.

What Causes Shoulder Pain and How It Shows Up

Shoulder pain can stem from the joint, the surrounding soft tissue, or the neck. Common causes include:

  • Rotator cuff strain, impingement, or tendinitis from overuse
  • Bursitis or frozen shoulder that limits movement and causes stiffness
  • AC joint sprain from a fall or direct impact
  • Cervical disc herniation pressing on a nerve root that serves the shoulder and arm
  • Cervical joint restriction referring pain into the shoulder

Symptoms vary depending on the source. Pain with reaching overhead or across the body is common, as is aching that worsens at night and interrupts sleep. Some patients notice weakness with lifting or carrying, limited range of motion, or catching, clicking, or grinding during movement. Burning or radiating pain into the upper arm, especially with neck stiffness, headaches, or arm numbness, may point to involvement from the cervical spine.

Finding the Source Before Building a Plan

One of the most common patterns we see is a patient who has spent months treating their shoulder without meaningful improvement because the cervical spine was never evaluated. If your shoulder pain hasn’t responded elsewhere, or if it comes with neck stiffness or arm symptoms, a full evaluation that includes the spine is worth pursuing.

Dr. Shippy evaluates both the shoulder and the cervical spine when a patient comes in with shoulder pain. This includes range of motion, strength, joint stability, and specific orthopedic tests for the rotator cuff, bursa, and AC joint. The neck is also assessed for disc involvement or nerve compression that could be contributing to shoulder symptoms.

When additional information is needed, imaging may be recommended to help identify soft tissue, joint, or cervical spine involvement.

Targeted Care for the Shoulder and Spine

Treatment at Shippy Chiropractic is built around what the evaluation finds. Chiropractic care addresses joint restriction in both the shoulder and cervical spine. Cold laser therapy reduces inflammation in the rotator cuff, bursa, and surrounding soft tissue and is often one of the most useful tools for impingement, tendinitis, and bursitis-related shoulder pain.

For shoulder pain caused by cervical disc herniation, spinal decompression relieves pressure on the affected nerve and allows symptoms to resolve.

At home, Dr. Shippy may recommend simple steps such as avoiding painful overhead movements, supporting the arm while sleeping, and using ice or heat based on the type of irritation. These habits don’t replace care, but they can promote healing and reduce strain between visits.
